GPS trackers for paedophiles

I think the idea has considerable merit. Sooner or latter the offenders will need to intergrated back into the community. There will always be people who will object to having them in their area. If it helps to allay their fears good.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has promised to introduce satellite tracking of sex offenders, overturning a long-standing reluctance within the state's Labor Government.

Electronic bracelets are currently used to check whether released sex offenders meet their curfews but they cannot be tracked.

Ms Bligh and a succession of corrective services ministers have previously said the tracking technology was prone to blind spots and was too expensive.

But on Monday she vowed to introduce the technology at her routine post-cabinet media conference.

Local Council takes over policing

In discussions over federalism the role of local government is often overlooked. In my veiw we would be better of if some of the States responsibilities and tax powers were given to the local government. Local policing seems appropriate to me. Frankston Council in Victoria is doing just that:

A MELBOURNE council fed up with too much crime and too few police is moving to hire a private security force to patrol local streets.

Frankston Council in Melbourne is poised to spend about $250,000 of public funds hiring eight roaming guards as part of a six-month trial to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour.

Deputy mayor Brian Cunial - a serving police officer stationed at Frankston - is among councillors expected to endorse the "rent-a-cop" plan at a special vote tonight....

Gun violence out of control

Thats what was reported in the Daily Telegraph today:

The city's shooting capital is Fairfield, with 34 shootings in just two years to the end of June.

Exclusive statistics from the Bureau of Crime Statistics show there were 157 drive-by and illegal shootings between July 2008 and the end of June, up from 129 the year before......

According to the Opposition they are illegal guns:Opposition police spokesman Mike Gallacher said NSW was awash with handguns, which were being imported from overseas and then traded on Sydney streets.

"Criminals are getting their hands on illegally imported firearms," he said last night.
But I thought banning fire arms was supposed to prevent such problems. At least thats what we were told. by the government. Heres an alternative plan. Instead of  passing more useless laws how catching the crims and throwing them into gaol.

Polanski finally arrested

Todays good news story, after 31 years child rapist Roman Polanski is finally arrested.:

FILM director Roman Polanski has been arrested in Switzerland on a 31-year-old US warrant, AP reports.

Organisers of the Zurich Film Festival said Polanski was detained by police yesterday.

Zurich police did not immediately confirm the information to AP.

It is understood he traveled to Switzerland to receive a lifetime award for his work as a director.

Polanski fled the United States for France in 1978 after pleading guilty to unlawful sex with an underage girl.

Polanski was originally indicted on six charges, including rape, for having sex with a 13-year-old girl after plying her with champagne and drugs.

He insisted the sex was consensual but pleaded guilty to a single count of having sex with a minor, punishable by up to 20 years in prison...

Lets see how long it will take the arty farty types to come out excusing him for his actions. As far as I'm concerned he can take his Oscar and stick it.

Super Max Jihadists

CONVICTED murderer Bassam Hamzy, accused of masterminding a drug ring from jail, has won the right to sue the New South Wales Commissioner of Corrective Services over his solitary confinement.

After the decision was handed down, Hamzy - who appeared by videolink from jail - shouted: "I just f..cked the commissioner, I just f..ed the commissioner.'....

It has been alleged that Mr Hamzy productively used his time by running a small business and providing helpful religious instruction:

Hamzy was charged with supplying drugs last December, after police alleged he made more than 19,000 calls from jail as he coordinated a $250,000-a-week drug operation.

In 2007, he was accused of converting fellow prisoners to Islam in order to form a gang labelled the "Super Max Jihadists''.

In 2001, he was convicted of murder, malicious wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm, maliciously discharging loaded arms with intent to do grievous bodily harm, threatening to use a firearm with intent to prevent or hinder lawful apprehension and conspiracy to murder....

Teenage girl in horrific hours-long sex ordeal

The teenagers are too young to have their names revealed but it would be interesting to know their background:

SEVEN youths, some in school uniform, subjected a 13-year-old girl to sex acts, one of which was filmed and sent to a mate, a Sydney judge has been told.

The girl, who felt threatened and intimidated, performed oral sex on five of the youths during her hours-long ordeal at two isolated toilet blocks and on a building rooftop in Sydney.

During one incident, she was told, "Just smile like you're enjoying it," while one youth later gave her his phone number and asked her to call him.

At times, youths yelled at their mates to "hurry up, it's taking too long" and "your turn's up". .....

The offences took place in July 2007, at two different toilet blocks in Yagoona parks and later on the rooftop of a Bankstown building.

The facts said the girl agreed to meet KD at the Bankstown Bus Depot on that day, after having first met him days earlier at a shopping centre. ......
